Hope, celebration, and inspiration filled the grounds of WISER Girls Secondary School in Migori County as the institution marked Mother’s Day with a special ceremony celebrating its recognition as a 2026 recipient of the Airbnb Community Fund grant.

The event brought together county government representatives, community leaders, teachers, parents, students, and development partners in a gathering that highlighted the transformative power of educating girls and empowering communities.

Speaking during the celebration, Prof. Rose Odhiambo, Chief Officer for Gender, Inclusivity, Culture and Social Services in Migori County and co-founder of WISER Girls, described the recognition as more than financial support.

“This recognition is not simply about funding. It is a global affirmation that the dreams of girls in rural Kenya matter,” she said.

Prof. Odhiambo noted that this marks the second time WISER has received support from the Airbnb Community Fund — a rare and significant milestone that underscores the organization’s growing impact in advancing girls’ education, leadership, and mentorship.

She thanked the County Government of Migori, the Airbnb community, teachers, staff, and families for their continued partnership in supporting girls’ education and gender equality.

Addressing students during the event, she encouraged them to remain confident in their dreams and abilities.

“Never underestimate the power of your voice, your education, or your dreams,” she told the learners. “Your background should never determine your destiny.”

The Mother’s Day celebration also paid tribute to mothers and guardians whose sacrifices continue to keep children in school despite economic hardships. Prof. Odhiambo acknowledged the resilience of women who work tirelessly in farms, markets, and homes to secure better futures for their daughters.

The event reinforced WISER Girls’ mission of transforming lives through education and community empowerment, while also highlighting the growing international recognition of grassroots initiatives supporting young African girls.

As the ceremony concluded, guests expressed optimism that the new grant support would further strengthen educational opportunities and leadership programs for girls in Migori County and beyond.
